Dialogue Recording Setup
Even in less-than-ideal recording scenarios, a few gear prep steps can help Voice ReGen deliver the best results. This Waves Audio info page, which will be updated every few months as new gear and OS updates roll out, covers what to do for your setup.

- Keep the microphone close to the person speaking.
- Use an external or wireless microphone where possible.
- Use Mono for one speaker.
- Use Stereo when you need a simple two-channel recording.
- Avoid immersive, surround, 360 or multichannel recording modes when uploading directly to ReGen.
- Avoid clipping. If your device shows a level meter, keep normal speech below the red zone.
The safest choices are simple voice-friendly formats:
- Mono
- Stereo
- Standard video audio
- Standard audio file export
Avoid immersive or surround-style options for direct uploads whenever possible.
- Spatial Audio
- Audio 360
- Quadraphonic
Check the common phone recording options below and choose Mono or Stereo whenever you can.
iPhone
iPhone recordings work well with ReGen when recorded in Mono or Stereo. Avoid Spatial Audio for now.
Best settings
- Settings > Camera > Record Sound > choose Mono or Stereo.
- Use Stereo if Mono is not available.
- Use an external or wireless microphone where possible.
- For noisy rooms, get the microphone close to the speaker.
Avoid
- Avoid Spatial Audio for ReGen uploads.
- Avoid immersive or surround-style recordings.
Good for
iPhone 15, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 17, iPhone Air
Voice Memos on iPhone
Voice Memos can work well, but use Mono or Stereo rather than Spatial Audio.
Best settings
- Use Mono for a simple voice memo.
- Use Stereo if needed.
- Keep the iPhone close to the speaker.
Avoid
Avoid Spatial Audio for ReGen uploads.
Good for
iPhone Voice Memos
Galaxy phone
Galaxy phone video works best with standard microphone recording or an external mic. Avoid 360 Audio Recording for direct ReGen uploads.
Best settings
- Use the normal Camera or Pro Video microphone mode.
- Use Front or connected audio device when the speaker is in front of the phone.
- Use an external USB-C or wireless microphone where possible.
Avoid
- Avoid 360 Audio Recording with Galaxy Buds for ReGen uploads.
- Avoid recording all directions when you only need one speaking voice.
Good for
Galaxy S23, Galaxy S24, Galaxy S25, Galaxy S26, Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy Z Flip
Pixel phone
Pixel video works well when the speaker is clear. Use Audio Zoom when recording a zoomed subject and use an external mic for noisy scenes.
Best settings
- Use normal video recording.
- Use Audio Zoom when filming a zoomed target.
- Use an external mic where possible.
Avoid
Avoid heavy post-processing that makes the voice sound gated or unnatural.
Good for
Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 10
Laptop and desktop microphones can work, but a closer external mic usually gives better dialogue.
MacBook or iMac
Mac built-in mics work, but a USB mic or external mic is better. Use Standard mic mode unless noise is severe.
Best settings
- Use a USB mic or external mic where possible.
- Use Standard mic mode for normal creative recording.
- Use Voice Isolation only when the recording environment is very noisy and the app supports it.
Avoid
- Avoid Wide Spectrum for ReGen voice uploads.
- Avoid excessive processing that changes the voice unnaturally.
Good for
MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac
Windows laptop or PC
Windows laptop and webcam mics work, but a USB mic gives ReGen a better dialogue track.
Best settings
- Select the correct microphone in Windows Sound settings.
- Use a USB mic or external mic where possible.
- Check the input level before recording.
Avoid
- Avoid using the wrong webcam or laptop mic by accident.
- Avoid excessive third-party noise suppression if it makes the voice pump or cut out.
Good for
Windows 11 laptop, USB webcam, Built-in laptop mic
Wireless kits are often a good choice because they keep the mic close to the speaker.
DJI Mic series
DJI wireless mics are excellent for ReGen when set to Mono or Stereo. Avoid Quadraphonic mode for direct upload.
Best settings
- Use Mono for one speaker.
- Use Stereo for two transmitters or simple two-channel recording.
- Use noise cancellation or low cut when the environment needs it.
- When connecting to a camera, set levels so normal speech lands around -12 to -6 dB.
Avoid
- Avoid Quadraphonic mode for direct ReGen uploads.
- Do not rely on a safety track as the main upload unless you know how to split tracks.
Good for
DJI Mic, DJI Mic 2, DJI Mic Mini, DJI Mic Mini 2, DJI Mic 3
RØDE Wireless series
RØDE wireless mics are excellent for ReGen. Use Merged for a simple upload, or Split if you need separate speakers.
Best settings
- Use Merged mode for one simple voice mix.
- Use Split mode when two transmitters should remain separate left and right channels.
- Use GainAssist where available.
- Use high-pass filter at 75 Hz or 100 Hz on Wireless PRO when wind or rumble is present.
Avoid
- Do not upload only a very quiet safety track unless it is the intended rescue track.
- Avoid Split mode if you do not want one speaker on the left and another on the right.
Good for
Wireless GO II, Wireless GO Gen 3, Wireless PRO, Wireless Micro, Wireless ME
Hollyland LARK wireless microphones
Hollyland LARK systems are good ReGen sources when set to Mono or Stereo. Use noise cancellation when the environment needs it.
Best settings
- Use Mono for one speaker.
- Use Stereo when recording two transmitters separately.
- Use noise cancellation in noisy environments if it improves speech clarity.
Avoid
- Avoid the wrong mode when connecting to a camera if only one mic is being captured.
- Avoid overusing noise cancellation if it makes voice sound unnatural.
Good for
LARK M2, LARK M2S, LARK MAX, LARK MAX 2
Saramonic wireless microphones
Saramonic wireless mics are good ReGen sources when using Mono or Stereo. Safety mode is a backup, not the normal upload path.
Best settings
- Use Mono for one speaker.
- Use Stereo for separate transmitters.
- Use noise cancellation or low cut when needed.
- Use AGC on supported models if the creator is not comfortable setting gain.
Avoid
- Do not upload a safety track as the main file unless it has been prepared correctly.
- Avoid very quiet backup tracks unless they are normalised..
Good for
BlinkMe, Blink500 ProX, Blink500 B2+, Saramonic Ultra, K9
Deity wireless and pocket recorders
Deity recorders and wireless systems can be excellent ReGen sources when exported as a normal Mono or Stereo file.
Best settings
- Use a normal Mono or Stereo WAV export.
- Use 32-bit float recording as protection against clipping where available.
- Use sensible gain staging for the camera or recorder path.
Avoid
- Avoid uploading multitrack production files directly unless ReGen explicitly supports that path.
- Avoid files where the dialogue is only one of many isolated tracks.
Good for
THEOS, PR-2
Cameras can work well if you keep the audio simple and avoid multichannel or immersive modes.
Insta360 X series
Insta360 cameras can work well, but use Voice Enhancement, Direction Focus, Wind Reduction or standard Stereo. Avoid 360 Audio for direct ReGen uploads.
Best settings
- Use Voice Enhancement for vlogging where available.
- Use Direction Focus when the speaker is in the camera direction.
- Use Wind Reduction outdoors.
- Use Stereo for standard video audio.
Avoid
- Avoid 360 Audio for ReGen uploads.
- Avoid immersive omnidirectional audio when the goal is one clear speaking voice.
Good for
Insta360 X3, Insta360 X4, Insta360 X4 Air, Insta360 X5
Insta360 Ace series
Ace cameras work best with Voice Enhancement or Wind Reduction for speech in noisy places.
Best settings
- Use Voice Enhancement where available.
- Use Wind Reduction outdoors.
- Use Stereo when an external mic is connected.
Avoid
Do not stand too far from the camera in noisy environments.
Good for
Ace, Ace Pro, Ace Pro 2
GoPro HERO series
GoPro works best for ReGen when Wind is set correctly and Voice tuning is used where available.
Best settings
- Use Voice Audio Tuning on HERO13 where available.
- Use Wind Auto for changing conditions.
- Use Wind On for strong wind. GoPro says this records in Mono using the best microphone available.
- Use an external mic with Media Mod or compatible adapter when possible.
Avoid
- Avoid placing the camera directly in heavy wind.
- Avoid relying on distant built-in mic audio for speech.
Good for
HERO10, HERO11, HERO12, HERO13, MAX, MAX2
Sony mirrorless and creator cameras
Sony cameras work well with ReGen when the level is clean and the mic is close. Use wind reduction only when needed.
Best settings
- Use an external mic where possible.
- Use Wind Noise Reduction outdoors when using the built-in mic.
- Use manual audio level if available and avoid clipping.
Avoid
- Avoid Wind Noise Reduction indoors if it makes the voice too low or unnatural.
- Avoid relying on distant camera-top audio in noisy locations.
Good for
ZV-E10, ZV-1, A7 IV, A7S III, A7R V, FX2
Canon EOS and PowerShot creator cameras
Canon cameras work well when audio levels are set correctly. Use wind filter outdoors and the attenuator for loud sources.
Best settings
- Use an external mic where possible.
- Use manual recording level if available.
- Enable Wind Filter outdoors.
- Enable Attenuator for loud environments if available.
Avoid
- Avoid levels hitting 0 dB or the red zone.
- Avoid Wind Filter when it makes the voice too thin indoors.
Good for
EOS R50, EOS R50 V, EOS R6, EOS R5 Mark II, PowerShot V1
Mobile add-on microphones usually work well when they are set up for a clean voice recording.
Shure MOTIV mobile microphones
Shure mobile mics are excellent for ReGen when set to Mono Cardioid or Stereo with sensible gain.
Best settings
- Use Flat preset as a starting point.
- Use Mono Cardioid for one speaker.
- Use Stereo only when a stereo image is actually useful.
- Set gain so peaks land around -12 to -6 dB.
Avoid
- Avoid recording too quietly.
- Avoid recording too hot or clipping.
- Avoid wide stereo if the speaker is off-mic.
Good for
MV88, MV88+, MV88+ Stereo USB, MV88 USB-C
Try uploading the file first.
If ReGen cannot detect the voice, export or convert the audio to Mono or Stereo and upload again.
If the recording has separate left and right speakers, export a normal stereo mix before upload.
If the file uses Spatial Audio, 360 Audio or Quadraphonic audio, export a standard Stereo version before upload.
Missing your exact device? Use simple Mono or Stereo settings, keep the microphone close to the speaker, and avoid immersive audio modes.
