Two of the best sounding analog style compressor plugins can be made even better by stacking them in series together. Learn why, and how to get the most out of this often overlooked compression mix trick.
![Why Waves CLA-2A and CLA-76 Compressors Sound Great Stacked Together in a Mix]()
What happens when you take two of the most-loved analog compressor sounds in history and strap them across a bus or track in series? You get control, punch, and vibe that feels alive in the mix. This technique is called serial compression, and it’s a favourite among engineers who want to balance transparency with character.
On their own, CLA-2A and CLA-76 are legends. Together, they complement each other beautifully. In this guide, we’ll show you why stacking them works so well, the steps to dial them in on a drum bus, and how this same approach can be applied to vocals, bass, acoustic guitars, and keyboards.
For context, CLA-2A is modeled on a classic electro-optical compressor known for its smooth, program-dependent response and simple controls. CLA-76 recreates a revered FET design that’s fast, punchy, and full of grit. Both plugins are modeled on Chris Lord-Alge’s personal hardware units, and they’re also available in the CLA Classic Compressors Bundle.

CLA-2A vs CLA-76: What’s the Difference?
The short answer: CLA-2A is smooth and slower, CLA-76 is fast and snappy.
- CLA-2A: The original hardware is famous for adding warmth and glue and uses an optical cell that reacts more gently to changes in level. It has only a Peak Reduction dial and Gain control, which makes it easy to set up. The CLA-2A models this perfectly and includes a handy Auto Makeup Gain option that balances the output level to the input automatically. This means you can focus on how much compression you want to hear without level differences distracting your decision making.
- CLA-76 has more control options: Attack, Release, Ratio, and Input/Output. Its fixed threshold means you drive signal into compression by raising the Input knob. With an attack speed as fast as 20 microseconds, it can tame even the sharpest transients. The Release can be extremely quick too, so it’s great for tightening dynamic material.
In practice: CLA-76 is the scalpel for fast peaks, CLA-2A is the brush that paints smooth levelling across the performance.
Why CLA-2A and CLA-76 Work So Well Together
Because they operate so differently, these compressors naturally complement each other. The CLA-76 can go first to catch strong peaks and transients, giving you precision control over headroom. The CLA-2A can then smooth things out with its slower, more musical compression, adding warmth and glue.
This is serial compression in action: splitting the work between two compressors rather than forcing one to do everything. The result is more natural, controlled dynamics with added tone and personality.
Drum Bus Example: The Material We’ll Use
For this guide, we’ll demonstrate stacking the CLA-76 and CLA-2A on a drum bus. This is one of the best places to hear their combined effect, as drums have both fast transients and sustaining energy that benefit from this two-stage approach.

Step 1: First Insert CLA-76 on the Drum Bus
![Drums setting the CLA-76 controls first Drums setting the CLA-76 controls first]()
Insert CLA-76 across your drum bus to begin shaping the transients. Remember that its threshold is fixed. You’ll need to increase the Input knob to drive the signal into compression, then lower the Output knob to balance levels back down.
Tip: Whatever you do with Input, do the opposite with Output. This way you’ll maintain a consistent level while still adjusting the amount of compression.
Step 2: Setting CLA-76 for Transient Reduction
We’re using CLA-76 first because its super-fast Attack is ideal for controlling the sharp hits of a drum kit.
It’s easy to get caught out though: both Attack and Release work in reverse compared to most compressors. Turn the knobs up and they get faster.
- Attack: counter-clockwise is slow (about 800 microseconds), clockwise is fast (20 microseconds). For quick control, set Attack around 7. Think of it as an “Attack Speed” control.
- Release: counter-clockwise is slow (1.1 seconds), clockwise is fast (50 milliseconds). For drums, setting Release near 7 lets the compressor grab the transient and then let go quickly.
Set the Ratio around 4:1 for firm control, then adjust the Input until you see healthy gain reduction without crushing the life out of the kit.
Listen to the example below. The first two bars are unprocessed, the third and fourth bars have the CLA-76 compression applied.

Step 3: Add CLA-2A for Smooth Character and Glue
![CLA-2A inserted after CLA-76 on drums CLA-2A inserted after CLA-76 on drums]()
With peaks under control, bring in the CLA-2A for levelling and tone. Start with Auto Makeup enabled and Peak Reduction at zero. As you adjust the Peak Reduction, the compressor will start to kick in.
The more Peak Reduction you dial in, the more character and smoothness you’ll hear. Don’t be afraid to push it a little — CLA-2A’s optical design adds musicality rather than harshness.
Listen to the example below. The first two bars are unprocessed, the third and fourth bars have the CLA-76 and CLA-2A serial compression applied.

Why This CLA Compressor Stack Works on Drums
This method works because each compressor is doing what it does best. CLA-76 handles fast, transient-shaping work. CLA-2A provides the smoother, mojo-filled levelling afterward.
If you tried to use the CLA-76 to get this kind of vibe, the result could sound too harsh. If instead you relied on the CLA-2A alone, it wouldn’t react fast enough to tame the peaks with the right style of attitude.
Going Further with CLA-76 and CLA-2A Track Stack
There are more ways to push this serial compressor stack:
- The “Bluey” CLA-76 revision has a slightly different feel on transient material. Swap it in and tweak your settings to taste.
- ALL mode on CLA-76 (All Buttons In) creates unpredictable compression timing and harmonic distortion. This can be wild on a drum bus if you want grit or attitude.
- Substitute CLA-2A with CLA-3A if you want something a little faster but still smooth. CLA-3A sits somewhere between the two, making it a strong alternative for bus work.

Beyond the Drum Bus: Vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitars, and Keys
Although we’ve focused on drums, this CLA-76 and CLA-2A stack shines on other sources too:
- Vocals: CLA-76 first for strong consonant control, CLA-2A second for smooth levelling across phrases. This keeps vocals upfront without harsh peaks.
- Bass: CLA-76 can catch sharp finger attacks or slap transients, while CLA-2A evens out sustained notes so the bass locks with the kick drum.
- Acoustic Guitars: CLA-76 tames strumming transients, CLA-2A smooths the sustain so the instrument sits evenly without poking out.
- Keyboards/Synths: CLA-76 adds definition and snap to percussive parts, while CLA-2A can glue pads and chords into the mix.
These combinations save headroom, add character, and make it easier to blend elements into a busy arrangement.
Try Them Together
If you want to try this compressor stack for yourself, both CLA-76 and CLA-2A plugins are available in Waves Creative Access. They are also available to try free for 7-days and can be found in the CLA Classic Compressors Bundle. Whether you’re reshaping a drum bus, controlling a vocal, or adding weight to bass, the CLA-76 and CLA-2A pairing is a versatile mix technique that delivers super reliable musical results.
