How to Solve Blank GUI Issues on Older Macs

Last updated on: 10/11/2021 4:00:00 AM

Are you seeing blank GUIs of Waves plugins, SoundGrid Studio or StudioRack (V12 and up) after installing the latest version via Waves Central on your Mac?

This may be because your Mac’s graphics card does not support ‘Metal’, which is required for plugins, SoundGrid Studio and StudioRack, version 12 and above.

To make sure that this is the reason, see Waves’ system requirements and check which Mac models support Metal.

If this is indeed the reason, you will need to roll back your Waves plugins to V11, or roll back your SoundGrid Studio and StudioRack to the previous version which does not require ‘Metal’ support.

The GUIs will then display properly.

Important Notes:
  • Newly purchased licenses will activate V11 software, if the product/s in question exists in V11.
  • To check if a plugin exists in an V11, scroll to the bottom of the V11 download page.

How to roll back:

First, uninstall your V12 (or above) plugins, SoundGrid Studio or StudioRack (whichever you have installed):

  1. Quit any host application.
  2. Launch Waves Central.
  3. In the left-hand side, click on the Settings page.
  4. Under Maintenance, click on the Uninstall drop-down menu and choose to uninstall V12 (or above) Plugins and Applications & SoundGrid I/O Drivers (If installed).

Once uninstalled, install V11 plugins. (If you’ve also uninstalled SuperRack and/or eMotion LV1, re-install them as well.)

  1. Click the Install Products page > All Products tab.
  2. Click the View menu and select V11 and Applications only.
  3. Use the search bar to search and choose the plugins or bundles you wish to install (or SuperRack and/or eMotion LV1, in case you’ve uninstalled them earlier).
  4. Review your selections in the Summary section.
  5. Click Install.

Next, install the previous version of SoundGrid Studio and StudioRack (if these were just removed):

  1. Quit any host application.
  2. Download this offline installer (632 MB).
  3. Unzip the folder to your desktop.
  4. Launch Waves Central.
  5. Access the Offline Installer page. Under Install from an Offline Installer, click Browse.
  6. When prompted, select the ‘Waves - SGST_STRK_V11_NonMetal1208’ folder on your desktop and click Open.
  7. Select StudioRack and/or the channel configuration of SoundGrid Studio you wish to install.
  8. Click Install.
  9. Restart your computer.
Important to remember:

After this installation is completed, each launch of Waves Central will display the Updates Available notice on the top right corner.
Do not install these updates, as this will update the SoundGrid Studio and StudioRack software back to the version that is not compatible with your computer (i.e., the version that requires ‘Metal’ support).
