From RVox to IDX: The Best Modern Compressor Plugins by Waves

Many producers think about compressors the way some people think about shoes… you can never have too many, and there’s always a perfect one for every occasion. Over the years, Waves has developed a wide range of compressor plugins, each with its own unique purpose. But can you confidently tell your RVox from your MV2? With so many plugins available through Waves Creative Access and our webstore, it’s understandable if you haven’t explored them all, let alone learnt how they all differ.

In a previous roundup, we focused on our analog-style compressors and how to get the most out of the classic character and warmth each provides. This time, we’re shining the spotlight on our modern compressors, the advanced digital tools that often introduce cutting-edge algorithms to bring a distinct and precise sound to producer’s mix palettes.

What sets the following plugins apart is their ease of use. Designed with modern producers in mind, these tools are super intuitive and straightforward to use, delivering the results you need quickly and efficiently. By minimizing the learning curve, the following compression plugins allow you to stay focused on what matters most… keeping your creativity flowing and your mixes on point.

OneKnob Pressure

Waves OneKnob Pressure Compressor Plugin

What is OneKnob Pressure?

A simple compressor with a single knob, OneKnob Pressure goes through two flavors of compression through its entire range, giving a quick and easy way to creatively squash your signal.

What’s so Good About OneKnob Pressure?

This one-knob compressor plugin may only have a single control at your virtual finger tips, but that control takes you from a parallel formulation through to more intense pumping compression.

Put OneKnob Pressure on a drum buss or whole beat, where it’s arguably at its best, bringing out everything that’s good about transients, lower-level body, and even baked-in reverb. You can also get a lot out of this straightforward effect by pairing it with other OneKnob Series plugins, just like as you can see below.

RVox

Waves RVox Vocal Compressor Plugin

What is RVox?

A plugin that was designed from the ground up for vocals and only vocals, Renaissance Vox (often referred to as RVox) gives you the essential controls and it virtually does the rest for you.

What’s so Good About Renaissance Vox?

Begin by applying a touch of gating to remove quiet unwanted parts. RVox’s gate was designed specifically with vocal processing in mind and is by far one of the most musical and easiest gates you can use to clean up unwanted breaths or noisy sounds between vocal lines.

Next, focus on the central Comp control to shape the dynamics of the vocal itself, which will enhance its presence and make it sound more polished, professional, and unmistakably ‘radio ready.’ Finally, adjust the output Gain control to account for any level changes and ensure the vocal sits perfectly within the mix.

Renaissance Vox isn’t just for sung vocals; it also excels with spoken word and voiceover recordings as well, delivering the same level of precision and quality no matter the task.

MV2

Waves MV2 Compressor Plugin

What is MV2?

MV2 is a dual compressor that brings together two processes: upward compression and downward compression.

What’s so Good About MV2?

Another simple but highly effective compression plugin, MV2 approaches the subject from two angles – quite literally. Of its two main controls, Low Level and High Level, the latter is responsible for the kind of compression we’re all used to, but the Low Level fader provides upward compression – a form of compression that brings lower-level signals up rather than bringing higher-level signals down.

When these two processes are combined, you get the best of both compression worlds: reduction of transients and the control of downward compression, plus the increase in focus on lower-level signals like reverb tails. Try MV2 on busses where there’s a lot going on – at both high and low levels.

You can read more about upward compression, how it works and how to get the best out of it, in our article, Upward Compression: The Overlooked Mix Hack You’ve Been Missing.

Renaissance Axx

Waves Renaissance Axx Compressor Plugin

What is Renaissance Axx?

A compressor made specifically for guitars, including bass guitars and extending to other string instruments

What’s so Good About Renaissance Axx?

Guitars can be tricky in music production, and with so many different styles and intentions, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to fitting them into a mix. Fortunately, Renaissance Axx offers that for one small part of the guitar mixing process: compression.

Built specifically with guitars in mind, and also able to work on plucked synths and other stringed instrument channels, Renaissance Axx is a great solution for controlling dynamics while keeping the energy and body that a guitar needs to find its place in the mix.

Set the Threshold and the Attack timing, and Renaissance Axx can handle the rest with its intelligent setup, helping you feel confident that your guitar‘s dynamics are tuned right. Then all that’s left to wonder about is why nobody nicknamed this stablemate of RVox and RComp to RAxx?

C6 Multiband Compressor

Waves C6 Multiband Compression Plugin

What is C6?

Our flagship multiband compressor, C6 gives you the ultimate in control over your signal’s dynamics, with enough flexibility – if you’re willing to invest the effort.

What’s so Good About Waves C6?

Our state-of-the-art multiband compressor is just about capable of any dynamic task, splitting your signal into six bands – including two floating bands – to achieve more surgical compression tasks… and come to think of it, limiting, expansion and upward expansion tasks too!

There’s a lot you can do in C6. Each band can be driven by an external sidechain or its own internal signal; you get a choice of release options; and there’s analog-style circuitry thanks to some clever modeling.

You can make best use of C6 Multiband Compressor while mastering, but it’s worth considering on busses, vocals and bass, especially if it’s a signal that’s throwing up a few unwelcome problems.

IDX Intelligent Dynamics

Waves IDX Intelligent Dynamics Plugin

What is IDX?

This simple yet extremely powerful plugin is similar to a one-knob multiband compressor, but there are a few parameters to dial in along the way. Free upon its launch in November 2024, IDX quickly became a fan favorite even when it went ‘on sale’ after its limited free period.

What’s so Good About Waves IDX?

IDX is one of those plugins that’s almost guaranteed to make whatever you add it to sound remarkably better. Its take on ‘spectrally aware’ compression means that as you push the Threshold parameter, the parts of the frequency spectrum with the most energy begin to be compressed first, and later the rest starts to enter. You can customize this behaviour by adjusting IDX’s tilt to rebalance which parts of the spectrum are getting more or less attention.

IDX has differences to our Curves Equator plugin, being more like a dynamics plugin with frequency conscience, rather than an EQ with an ability to curtail overly ambitious signals in gain as they happen.

Smack Attack

Waves Smack Attack Plugin

What is Smack Attack?

A transient shaper made specifically for drums and percussion.

What’s so Good About Smack Attack?

While technically not a compressor plugin, Smack Attack earns its place on this list as a versatile dynamics shaper. Designed with transient shaping in mind, it’s a powerful tool for a variety of material but truly shines when used on drums. Whether you’re looking to enhance crack, add thump, or even dial them back, Smack Attack is built to give your drums the perfect dynamic balance.

With customizable shapes for both the Attack and Sustain stages, Smack Attack goes beyond basic transient design. It allows you to sculpt and fine-tune both the transient and body of your drums, offering independent control over level, shape, duration, and even detection sensitivity. This plugin is often all you need to create impactful, punchy, and dynamic drum tracks.

Smack Attack can be all you need to dial in impactful and powerful drums.
