Peak Level

A measurement of the highest momentary level of a signal. This is a valid means of assessing peaks with very short durations, but it reveals little about the overall loudness of the signal.

Audio software plugins: Dorrough Stereo, Dorrough Surround, PAZ Analyzer

Phaser

An effect in which two signals are time delayed with respect to each other. In classic phasing, frequencies in the original signal are delayed by different amounts, causing peaks and valleys in the output signal which are not in a linear harmonic series.

Related to: Chorus Effect, Flanger, Delay Time, Feedback, Multi-tap Delay

Audio software plugins: Doubler, MetaFlanger, SuperTap, H-Delay Hybrid Delay

Pink Noise

Noise that has a constant energy inside any frequency band with a constant Q. Pink noise represents the average spectrum of a typical audio signal, and since humans analyze sound in approximately constant Q bands, pink noise is the standard noise used when calibrating listening environments.

Audio software plugins: Dorrough Stereo, Dorrough Surround, PAZ Analyzer

Pitch

The term used to describe how high or low a tone note is on a musical scale. Whereas the fundamental frequency of a sound can be scientifically described, pitch is somewhat subjective, influenced by overtone elements, amplitude, and even cultural factors.

Related to: Formant, Monophonic, Octave, Polyphonic, Semitone, Voiced vs. Unvoiced Sounds

Audio software plugins: Waves Tune, Waves Tune LT, SoundShifter, UltraPitch

Pitch Shifting

A recording or post-production process that involves changing the frequency of an input signal.

Related to: Formant, Monophonic, Octave, Polyphonic, Semitone, Voiced vs. Unvoiced Sounds

Audio software plugins: Waves Tune, Waves Tune LT, SoundShifter, UltraPitch

Polyphonic

A sound source with two or more simultaneous pitches.

Related to: Formant, Monophonic, Octave, Semitone, Voiced vs. Unvoiced Sounds

Audio software plugins: Waves Tune, Waves Tune LT, SoundShifter, UltraPitch

PPM (Peak Program Meter)

A measuring device similar to a VU meter, but designed to measure peak levels. The rise time of a PPM is much faster than a VU meter, typically 10 milliseconds.

Related to: Peak Level, RMS, VU Meter, Wavelet Based Analysis, Weighting

Audio software plugins: Dorrough Stereo, Dorrough Surround, PAZ Analyzer

Pre-delay

A process that delays the onset of reverberation. In the real world, the more space between you and reflective surfaces such as walls or ceilings, the greater the pre-delay.

Related to: Convolution, Decorrelation, Density, Diffusion, Early Reflections

Audio software plugins: IR-1 Convolution Reverb, IR-L Convolution Reverb, IR-360 Convolution Reverb, Renaissance Reverb, TrueVerb
