Charles Deenen

Need for Speed, Fast and Furious

In a career that has spanned more than twenty years, Charles Deenen has lent his hand to over 200 games, numerous films, and dozens of film trailers.

Around 1985, in the Netherlands, Charles and a partner created the first company in the world expressly dedicated to producing audio for computers. His work was eventually noticed by Interplay, and they moved him to the USA in 1991 to work on Baldur’s Gate, Fallout, and Star Trek game franchises.

In 2000, Charles took a break from the gaming industry to pursue sound design for films. In that time, he worked on sound design for the movies
Fast and Furious 1 & 2, among others. This work fed his passion for fast cars, loud sound, and the ultimate pursuit of emotionally engaging audio. Alongside long-format sound design, Charles continues to work on movie trailers.

Currently living in Vancouver, Canada, Charles serves as Senior Audio Director at Electronic Arts Blackbox. At EA, he managed to combine his fascination for fast cars with his seasoned history in games on the Need for Speed series. He now provides guidance to the next generation of audio directors.  Charles helps the Vancouver Film School as an advisor, maintains the Yahoo ‘Sound Design’ bulletin board, and has guest lectured internationally.

Charles recently talked to us about his long-term experience with Waves. “My first plugin love 10 years ago was the L1 processor, and from then on I was addicted. I like huge, loud sounds, and this plugin surely helps with this.  We jokingly had a saying in the mid 90’s: ‘if it doesn’t sound good, L1 it’.”

“Every Waves plugin serves a purpose for me, whether it’s adding low-end with Renaissance Bass, pitch/amplitude processing with MondoMod, and many others.  My latest favorites are the L3 plugs and Z-Noise. Z-Noise helps to take out the noise in lower-decibel car recordings without introducing the jingle-bell effect of many other de-noisers.  L3 gives that extra ‘bite’ needed.  MetaFlanger, Linear Phase EQ, Doppler, and Soundshifter help to add some more movement to car recordings. Trans-X is truly a blessing when having to add more attack-punch to effects and drum tracks to allow them to cut through a dense soundscape. What I like most about Waves plugins is their ease of use. When you’re in creative-mode, you really don’t want to think about how to use a plugin. It should be straightforward, and Waves delivers.”

“Waves is the only company making must have bundles for sound-design & mixing.”
